Are birds dinosaurs?
Yes. Birds are the only dinosaurs still alive today. They evolved within the theropods, a group of dinosaurs that walked on two legs. T. rex and Velociraptor were theropods too, though neither of them was the direct ancestor of today’s sparrows.
How do scientists know?
Scientists compare fossils with living animals. The skeletons share the same features, and there is fossil evidence of feathers as well. Put together, the clues place birds firmly inside the dinosaur family.
So a chicken doesn’t just look a bit like an ancient dinosaur. It’s a living member of the group.
What Archaeopteryx tells us
Archaeopteryx lived about 150 million years ago. It had feathers and wings, but also teeth, claws on its wings and a long bony tail. That mixture helps scientists understand how the earliest birds evolved.
Its fossils were found in Germany. It is one of the most famous early birds, though new discoveries keep changing our picture of where the very first birds belong.
Feathers before flight
Velociraptor had feathers, yet it could not fly. Flying was not the only thing feathers were good for: they could keep a dinosaur warm or help it show off to others.
T. rex was a much bigger relative. Fossil impressions show scales on parts of its body, but scientists do not have the full picture of what covered it.
Why crocodiles are not dinosaurs
Crocodiles and dinosaurs share ancestors further back in time. Both belong to a wider group called archosaurs, but they sit on different branches of it. Birds are on the dinosaur branch. Crocodiles are not.
Pterosaurs, Pteranodon among them, are another related branch. Being able to fly does not make an animal a bird, or a dinosaur.
So did the dinosaurs really die out?
When people say the dinosaurs became extinct, they usually mean all the dinosaurs except birds. The ancestors of modern birds survived the extinction at the end of the Cretaceous.
Look at the Archaeopteryx, Velociraptor and T. rex cards side by side. They are relatives, yet their sizes and ways of life are very different.
