Did T. rex have feathers?

Short answer: on T. rex’s neck, hips and tail they found scales — like a lizard, not like a chicken. Too soon to draw him as a giant parrot. Small cousins really did have feathers. And in China there were big fluffy relatives. Our T. rex card is 12 metres and 8 tonnes. Longer than a school bus. A giant like that does not need a warm fluff coat the way a turkey does.

What they found on T. rex skin

Scientists looked at rock, not a cartoon. On the neck, by the hip, and on the tail, T. rex left skin prints. Little bumpy scales. No feathers in those spots.

That is not the whole animal from nose to tail. They did not find the back that way. So the honest line is: “most of what we saw was scales.” Not “never a single feather anywhere.”

Why everyone still draws him fluffy

Because they found feathers on other hunters in the same big family. Small two-legged hunters were often fluffy — for warmth, not to fly like an eagle.

People think: if the cousin has feathers, the king does too. That works for birds. Giant T. rex skin says something else. Same family. Different coat.

The big fluffy cousin is not T. rex

In China they found Yutyrannus. Almost nine metres, and long soft fluff on him. Handsome, scary, and really feathered. A relative, not the same animal.

Yutyrannus lived earlier and was lighter. Our T. rex is later and eight tonnes. Do not copy the fluff from one onto the other, like borrowing a brother’s hat.

Velociraptor — yes, feathers

Our Velociraptor is two metres and 15 kilograms — a big turkey, not a person. On its arm they found spots where feathers attached. It did not fly. Feathers kept it warm and helped it look like itself.

If you want a dinosaur that is “feathers for sure,” open the Velociraptor card. Leave T. rex in scales until someone finds otherwise.

How to draw it without lying

T. rex: dark scales, teeth as long as a banana, tiny arms. A little fluff on the back if you really want — they have not seen that spot. Do not wrap the whole thing like a parrot.

Velociraptor: feathers, turkey, big claw. Pteranodon: skin wings, and it is not a dinosaur — that is another guide.

Questions kids ask

Did T. rex have feathers?
The skin they found is scaly. Feathers could hide in small patches nobody found. Too soon to draw him fully fluffy.
Why is T. rex fluffy in some books?
Because the small cousins had feathers. Artists put the same coat on the king. T. rex skin does not show that.
Is Yutyrannus a T. rex?
No. A relative from China, smaller, and they really found fluff on him.
Which dinosaurs had feathers for sure?
Lots of small hunters. Velociraptor — yes. Birds too: they are dinosaurs, and the feathers are theirs.
Why would a dinosaur have feathers if it cannot fly?
To stay warm and so others could see it. Wings for flying came later, with birds.
In Jurassic Park T. rex is bald. Is that true?
From the skin they found — mostly yes. The movie got the scales. It got Velociraptor’s size wrong.
