Pteranodon and Plesiosaurus are not dinosaurs
Short answer: Pteranodon is not a dinosaur. Plesiosaurus is not one either. The first is a pterosaur — a flying reptile. The second is a sea reptile with a long neck. Dinosaurs are their own family, mostly on land. On our site they sit next to T. rex because they lived at the same time and everyone draws them in one park. Same time. Different family.
Dinosaur does not mean “any old reptile”
Scientists keep the word for one branch: a special hip, legs under the body, usually land. T. rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Velociraptor — yes. Anything old and scaly — no.
Movies dump everyone in one shot. More fun for a ticket. Messy for an answer in class.
Pteranodon: sky, not dinosaur
Pteranodon on the card has a wingspan of about seven metres, weighs about 25 kilograms, Cretaceous. The wing is skin on a long finger — not a bird wing with feathers. It soared over the sea and caught fish.
Pterosaurs are close cousins of dinosaurs, like cousins, not siblings. They flew. They were not “dinosaurs who bought a plane ticket.” Real dinosaurs did not go into the air the Pteranodon way. Birds did — and birds are dinosaurs. Different talk.
Plesiosaurus: sea, not dinosaur
Plesiosaurus is five metres, Jurassic, a neck like the Nessie story (nobody has proved Nessie with a bone). Flippers, fish, water. Not “a dinosaur that learned to swim.” Sea reptiles have their own club: ichthyosaurs, mosasaurs, plesiosaurs.
Spinosaurus liked water and fish — and is still a dinosaur. Difference: Spinosaurus comes from land hunters who went to the river. Plesiosaurus never joined that land family.
How not to mix them up in a picture
Skin wing, crest on the head, legs too weak for a long walk — pterosaur. Long neck, four flippers, no life on land — plesiosaur. Two legs or four pillars, lives on the ground, eats leaves or meat — probably a dinosaur.
If you are unsure, open the card: Pteranodon and Plesiosaurus already say this. If it says “hunter, Cretaceous” — still look at the wings and flippers.
Why they still live in this encyclopedia
Because kids ask about them in the same breath as T. rex. And because they share the Mesozoic: the same sky, the same sea, the same 66 million years at the end for a lot of them.
Short answer for a grown-up: “lived then, were not dinosaurs.” Long answer: this guide.

- If it has skin wings and a head crest, do not write “dinosaur” under the drawing.
- Nessie, even if she were real, would be a plesiosaur — not a dinosaur.
