How a fossil is made
Short answer: a fossil is not “an old bone from a shelf.” It is a bone that sand or mud covered, then stone slowly filled. First the animal died. Then something hid it fast, before others ate it or the wind took it. Then new layers piled on, and water with minerals leaked into the holes in the bone. A huge number of years later, the bone-shape is stone. Almost nobody ends like that. Most just vanish.
First death, then a race with time
The animal died — by a river, in a desert, on a shallow sea floor. Meat and skin go bad fast. Other animals may eat them. Hard bits stay: bones, teeth, sometimes shell.
If the body lies in the wind, after a year there is almost nothing left of dinner. To become stone it has to be buried soon: sand, silt, mud, ash. Like a blanket. Museums say it this way: death, then burial, then stone.
Water brings stone inside
New layers fall on top. They are heavy. They squeeze. Silt becomes rock. Meanwhile water seeps through the bones and leaves tiny crystals in the holes.
Bone is like a sponge. Stone fills the gaps — often flint or lime. That is why a fossil is heavy and can ring if you tap it (do not tap it in a museum). Sometimes water dissolves the bone and leaves a bone-shaped hole. Then stone fills the hole too. That is a cast.
Not only bones
There are footprints. A dinosaur stepped in mud, the mud dried, sand covered it — and the print became stone. There is poo. There are eggs.
Maiasaura on our card is nine metres and about three tonnes, Cretaceous, 80–75 million years ago. People found her with nests and babies. Those are fossils too — not a thigh bone, a home and a family.
Archaeopteryx is half a metre. Its feathers printed in thin limestone. Without that thin slab we would not see the wing.
Why there are so few
You need several pieces of luck at once: buried fast, the right water, the layer not washed away, then Earth lifts that layer up again, and a person notices it. Almost every dinosaur left no stone.
So one good bone is a party. And you cannot invent a whole park from a mosquito in amber: amber keeps things a different way. That is another talk.
Where to look if you are not a scientist
Fossils live in layered rocks — sandstone, limestone, shale. Not in granite. A layered river bank on a walk is closer than a shiny cliff.

- How is a fossil made?
- The animal died, something buried it fast, water brought minerals into the bones. After a huge number of years the same shape is stone.
- Is any old bone a fossil?
- No. A dog bone in the garden is just a bone. A fossil is when stone filled or replaced the tissue.
- Why are fossils so rare?
- You need a fast burial, the right water, and the layer opening later. Almost every body just rotted.
- Are footprints fossils too?
- Yes. They are traces of life, not the body itself. Maiasaura eggs count too.
- Can I find a fossil myself?
- Sometimes on a layered bank. Do not break other people’s finds and do not take them from a reserve. If you find one, show a grown-up.
- Is a mosquito in amber a dinosaur fossil?
- Amber keeps things another way: resin, not stone in bone. You cannot build a T. rex from it. Cloning is a separate guide.
Remember this
- A fossil is heavy because there is stone inside. A real bone does not ring like that.
- Draw sand layers over the skeleton, not only “a bone in dirt.”
